Projects Villa Berg

The Villa Berg is a historic landmark in Stuttgart. It has over the course of time served as a royal villa, urban gallery, and as a studio for the Süddeutschen Rundfunk (SDR). All of its features are of great importance for the city, thereby creating a challenge to find a new purpose and interior space plan and design for the villa.

Our ambition is to preserve the unique character and essence of Villa Berg. The appeal of the building lies in the contrast that exists between old and new – between the reconstructed facade and the original, interior style from the 1950’s. Therefore, the unification of the façade with the interior, as well as the provision of natural light in all rooms is fundamental.

The program for the villa will include a business club and conference centre to provide high quality facilities for work and for meetings of various sizes. A restaurant and an additional, independent café with a south-facing terrace and eastward view of Stuttgart will complete the usage concept.

The conceptual and creative key element is the free flowing, large atrium, which allows views to all floors and creates the communication centre of the building.
The appearance of the entire interior will be dominated by lightweight, translucent materials.

With help from a new translucent roof membrane to allow daylight to penetrate the garden level; and from the newly built, intermediate floors that enable the transmission of light, it is possible to establish a setback from the historic façade, allowing the tall, manorial windows to stand free.

In addition, features like the original, curved staircase dating from the 50’s, at the west end of the building, will remain preserved.

Visitors enter the building through a prestigious reception area complete with a staircase from the 50’s. As one ascends, the building becomes more private at the top. The restaurants and related amenities on the ground floor are open to public, while the business club and conference rooms lie on the upper floors. To ensure the greatest flexibility, the rooms in the conference center can be adjusted to size through the use of sliding partitions.

After years of being buried in oblivion, the Villa Berg will now become an attractive destination in the urban city of Stuttgart.
