Drais Elementary and Public High School

Karlsruhe, Germany

The Drais School, founded in 2013/2014, is situated in the urban district called Karlsruhe Mühlburg. The school’s structural aim is to permanently install three classes per grade in the elementary school level as full-time school and four classes per grade in the public high school level. This involves the extension of the existing building to provide spaces for 990 children.

Regarding the pedagogical concept a variety of open working spaces with a communicative character and free transitions between different traffic areas will be offered. The differentiated levels of the building will blend into the surroundings. Interweaving the formerly detached houses, the connecting routes between the buildings and the light structured pergolas are converting them into a living organism. The appreciated fauna of the shady schoolyard’s vegetation will enrich the overall concept as a mutual symbiosis between indoor and outdoor spaces.
