Two of our buildings, the adidas Arena and the KIT Energy Lab, have been shortlisted for the DAM Preis. The award annually honors outstanding buildings in Germany and is conferred by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and JUNG. From the initial 100 nominees, a total of 22 projects were selected for the shortlist.
The adidas ARENA forms a distinctive landmark on the campus in Herzogenaurach and gives the company’s headquarters a highly distinctive appearance. The new office and reception building marks the main entrance, lending it a strong visual identity. In the upper stories, a modern working environment encompassing 52,000 square meters has been created with an eye to the needs of the future. Functional considerations were prioritized in the design of the envelope: the fixed elements providing shade protect the glass facades from intense sunlight while also projecting natural light deep into the building.
The Kit Energy Lab at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is an experimental building in the truest sense, for this is where researchers investigate how future energy systems interact and energy networks connect intelligently. The homogeneous aesthetic of the exterior envelope—a polycarbonate skin that covers the entire building—plays a significant role here, along with the simple and almost iconic outline of the massing. During the day, the translucent polycarbonate panels ensure that just the right amount of natural light enters the test hall, while at night warm light gleams through the facade and brings an internal luminescence to the building.
