Competition - Nové Holešovice Prague

Prague, CZ

Developed together with CMC Architects, our competition proposal for Nové Holešovice addresses the urban and architectural transformation of the area surrounding Prague’s Holešovice Station. The task was to create a coherent, climate-responsive urban district with a new multimodal transport hub, a revitalized station plaza and stronger connections between infrastructure, public space and the Vltava waterfront.

The design creates a clear public address for the station and organizes the area around a generous new plaza. The square connects railway platforms, metro, tram and bus stops into a legible multimodal transport hub, while improving pedestrian comfort, orientation and access to the riverfront. A gently sloping topography, planted areas and covered connections structure the public realm and reduce the need for underpasses or bridges.
The landscape concept translates the fluvial and industrial history of Holešovice into an urban sponge. Green roofs, planted courtyards, permeable surfaces, rain gardens and cisterns collect, retain and reuse rainwater, supporting biodiversity, improving the microclimate and strengthening the site’s resilience to heat and heavy rainfall.

At the center of the proposal, the train station building CIII-2 combines station functions, retail, office, hotel, conference and restaurant uses. Its elevated volume responds to the metro tunnel below and creates a permeable ground level for movement, public life and events. A fixed shading and daylight system gives the building a distinctive technical expression while reducing solar gains and improving daylight quality. The structural concept uses a steel system with long-span trusses and V-shaped composite columns to bridge complex underground infrastructure. Together, these elements define a resilient and accessible station district that brings mobility, landscape and everyday urban life into closer dialogue.
