Harvard’s Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) establishes a forward-looking research and learning environment that promotes collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. It combines advanced academic facilities with publicly engaging spaces and a strong architectural identity.

Site Plan

The building is organized into three interconnected volumes linked by multi-storey glazed atria, which serve as light-filled social hubs. Teaching spaces, makerspaces, and public functions are located at lower levels, engaging the urban context, while flexible classrooms support a range of learning formats. Research laboratories are arranged in the upper levels, providing adaptable and modular environments for long-term use. Generous shared spaces between lab areas encourage interaction and interdisciplinary exchange among students and faculty.

Sustainability is integral to the design, with high-performance systems, green roofs, and a carefully engineered façade that optimizes daylight, reduces energy demand, and enhances comfort. A hydroformed stainless-steel screen provides solar control while maintaining views and natural light. The result is a highly efficient and flexible building that fosters collaboration, supports advanced research, and sets a benchmark for sustainable campus development.
