Pioneer Park

Hanau, DE

The Pioneer Park Hanau is a sustainable, climate-friendly new neighborhood on the grounds of a former military base and is home to around 5,000 people. The completed elementary school and day-care center form an educational and architectural ensemble centered around a shared schoolyard open to the surrounding landscape.

Located at the eastern edge of the Pioneer Quarter, the elementary school and the day care center share a site of more than 10,000 square meters adjacent to the Kleine Bulau woodland. Together, the two buildings frame a spacious schoolyard open towards the landscape, which forms the center of the complex. It provides space for outdoor teaching and joint events, strengthening the architectural and educational relationship between the school and nursery.

The three-story elementary school complements the day-care center with balanced proportions and a warm timber facade. The integrated sports hall opens onto the schoolyard and can also be used independently for events outside school hours.

The ground floor accommodates the cafeteria, afternoon childcare, and administrative offices. Classrooms and breakout rooms on the two upper floors are arranged around bright, open-plan spaces that support teaching, communication, and informal exchange. An atrium connects the library, preschool room, and activity rooms, creating a varied and communicative learning environment.

The two-story day-care center accommodates 155 children aged six and under. Its group and recreation rooms face south and open onto outdoor terraces and play areas overlooking the adjacent woodland.

Instead of enclosed corridors, the circulation areas expand into informal spaces for play and interaction. Cloakrooms with integrated seating and lockers, as well as transparent glass facades, create bright spaces closely connected to the surrounding landscape. Varied timber cladding and large windows reinforce the center’s natural character.

Pioneer Park has been designed to be part of an environmentally friendly and sustainable urban quarter of the future. This idea is reflected in the childcare concept “Garden Gnomes: The Green Day-Care Center in the Pioneer Quarter,” which focuses on nature and the environment.
