Residential Development Mühlrain

Stuttgart, DE

A new residential quarter is planned on a green hillside site near Stuttgart’s city center, aiming to reinterpret housing typologies in response to contemporary social and ecological needs. The design leverages the site’s topography and landscape connections to create a distinctive, future-oriented living environment.

Section AA

The Lehenstraße site, located between dense urban fabric and open landscape, offers ideal conditions for housing that responds to Stuttgart’s hillside setting. A loose arrangement of buildings embedded in greenery preserves visual connections to the valley and hills, while public pathways link the new quarter to the existing city. The scheme comprises seven buildings in two typologies: linear townhouses along Lehenstraße and more articulated, landscape-oriented structures. A transitional building mediates between urban and natural contexts, while the others extend into the terrain, creating strong connections to the landscape.

Elevation

Efficient layouts ensure sunlight and views for all units, offering varied spatial qualities with a high degree of privacy. Modular construction enables flexibility and adaptable interiors. Underground parking keeps the site largely car-free. The energy concept reduces demand through high-performance building standards, passive strategies, and efficient systems supported by solar energy, with an optional biomass solution. The landscape design maintains the natural slope, using light-canopy trees and largely unbuilt green spaces to reinforce the integration of architecture and landscape. Overall, the project creates a compact, flexible, and forward-looking residential environment shaped by Stuttgart’s topography.
