Town Hall Grosskarolinenfeld

Grosskarolinenfeld, DE

The new Town Hall in Großkarolinenfeld adds a modern and assured touch to the small Bavarian town, creating a vital focal point in its center. What sets this structure apart is its integration into a newly designed network of green areas, public squares, and pathways that resolve the town's historical lack of a clearly defined center. The project confidently links the new town hall square with the familiar old town hall and the natural landscape of the nearby Erlbach stream.

To establish an integrated urban space, the new town hall square is situated between the old and new town hall buildings. A public pathway cuts directly through the ground floor of the new structure, connecting the public square via a pedestrian bridge with the playground and festival areas to the west. This open axis is complemented by the redesigned town hall gardens, which feature generous stepped seating along the banks of the Erlbach stream, providing local residents with an attractive area for rest and social activities.

The town hall is divided into two distinct levels to reflect its public function. The transparent ground floor is split into two independent, free form sections: one housing the busy citizens' service office and main foyer, and the other containing the council chamber and wedding room, which can combine for larger events. Above, the less public administration offices form a regular oblong block structured around two internal atriums. One atrium extends down to funnel daylight into the ground floor, while the other serves as a private interior courtyard for staff.

To reflect the differing internal functions, the building facades are designed with contrasting materials. While the ground level is completely transparent, the upper story features alternating open surfaces and closed expanses of pre grayed larch wood. The upper story window areas are equipped with manually operated sliding shutters made of vertical wooden slats, which provide effective, user controlled solar shading. This timber clad volume is built using a wood frame construction with wood fiber insulation, matching the building's highly sustainable energy concept, which utilizes two air source heat pumps, underfloor heating, and a rooftop photovoltaic system to achieve a certified high efficiency energy standard.
