Youth and Recreation Center Sternentor

Hohenmölsen, DE

This pilot project for circular construction marks an important step toward more sustainable building practices.

Located in Hohenmölsen, near Leipzig, the future youth and recreation center will be constructed entirely from modular precast concrete elements reclaimed from a former GDR-era donor building. By reusing existing structural components, the project demonstrates how architectural quality, resource efficiency, and social value can be combined in a forward-looking way.

Initiated by the Chair of Circular Construction at BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg in collaboration with the City of Hohenmölsen, the project is part of the EU research initiative RE:CREATE. As a preparation for the project, the partners reclaimed precast concrete slabs from a former housing complex dating back to the GDR period. Together with Behnisch Architekten they are giving them a new architectural life.

The reused elements will be transformed into a activity center on the site of a former outdoor swimming pool, set within a distinctive natural landscape. The new center will serve as an open meeting place for different age groups, offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities for the surrounding neighborhood and the city of Hohenmölsen.

„With this initiative national and international building and environmental policy goals, such as reducing climate-damaging emissions and conserving resources will be met. By reusing components, the project aims to conserve embodied energy, reduce CO₂ emissions by over 90% compared to conventional methods.“ ReCreate
