The design proposes an open and accessible building composed of four distinct volumes, each representing a key exhibition theme: the ocean, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the giants of the sea. This subdivision reduces the overall scale and allows the complex to relate to the surrounding warehouse structures. The building opens primarily towards the water, activating the promenade and strengthening the connection between city and harbor.
Visitors enter through a central foyer, a light-filled space that serves as orientation point and public meeting area. From here, a continuous exhibition route leads through the different volumes, guiding visitors from large-scale displays to immersive aquarium experiences. The aquariums are organized around a central technical core, enabling efficient operation while creating a clear and engaging visitor sequence.

The architectural form follows functional requirements, with flowing volumes that reflect the internal circulation. Curved facade bands unify the individual buildings into a cohesive ensemble, while their sculptural expression enhances the city skyline. Large-scale steel panels, inspired by shipbuilding techniques, define the exterior and reinforce the maritime character. The foyer remains open and publicly accessible, offering views towards the harbor and the historic city. Additional functions such as café, shop, and event spaces are integrated at ground level, extending the public realm into the building.
The surrounding landscape continues the harbor’s material language, using natural stone paving to create a seamless transition between interior and exterior. The result is a distinctive cultural building that combines education, experience, and urban integration in a strong architectural identity.
